Why the account is the bottleneck

For a resident of most countries, buying a US-listed stock means passing identity checks, sometimes proving a US tax identifier, and funding an account across borders. Each step eliminates people.

This is why tokenized and fractional routes have grown quickly outside the US.

Route one: a local broker with US market access

Many countries have domestic brokers that offer US equities through a partner. This is usually the most boring and most reliable option.

You keep local-language support and local dispute resolution. The trade-off is higher fees and sometimes limited order types.

Route two: an international brokerage

Global platforms let non-US residents open accounts remotely. Fees are typically lower and access is broader.

The trade-off is that you are relying on a foreign entity for custody, and tax paperwork for US dividends can be more involved.

Route three: tokenized stocks

Tokenized equity products let you hold an economic exposure to a stock as a blockchain token, purchased with stablecoins. The appeal is real: no traditional account, instant settlement, small minimums.

The risks are also real and worth stating plainly:

Issuer and custody risk

You are trusting the issuer to actually hold the underlying shares. Ask who the custodian is and whether the backing is audited.

Limited shareholder rights

Token holders typically do not get voting rights, and dividend treatment depends entirely on the issuer's structure.

Regulatory exposure

The legal status of tokenized equity varies by jurisdiction and is still moving. This is the single largest unknown.

Route four: fractional shares through an app

Several apps offer fractional US share ownership to international users. This is genuine share ownership, which is a meaningful advantage over tokens.

Availability depends on your country of residence.

What to compare before choosing

Total cost per trade, custody arrangement, dividend and withholding tax treatment, and what happens if the platform fails. That last question is the one people skip, and it is the one that matters most.

A blunt summary

If you can open a real brokerage account, do that. Tokenized products are a genuine convenience for people who cannot, but they are a different instrument with different risks, not a free lunch.

Size positions accordingly.
